The Berns Company was founded by George Berns and his brother Walter Berns in 1955. George’s son Steve Berns, now in his 50’s, grew up in the industrial surplus business. Remaining in Long Beach, he attended California State University Long Beach receiving a degree in business. Steve is the President of The Berns Company and BT Equipment Company Inc.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s Berns’ primarily bought and sold new surplus from the United States Government. In the late 1960’s, The Berns Company purchased a gear manufacturing company and began manufacturing Drive Train Components for the material handling, construction, forestry, and mining industries. Over the last 63 years, the company has grown to six warehouses and one of the largest inventories of material handling replacement parts and components in the world. The Berns group of companies now employs 40 individuals. The Berns Company has become a major wholesale supplier to Original Equipment Manufacturers such as Clark Material Handling, Hyster, Yale, Tug Technologies and other OEM’s.
Today, The Berns Company continues to be the largest material handling surplus buyer in the world. We continue to buy inventories daily. The staff at The Berns Company brings many years of experience to the customer. Steve has worked in every department and aspect of the business since he was a child. He has continued the company philosophy of developing and maintaining excellent relationships with many suppliers and vendors over the years.
Brett Berns is Chief Operating Officer and has also worked at Bern’s since he was a child. Brett is buying and selling good used forklifts, forklift attachments and (GSE) ground support equipment towing tractors. Brett graduated in 2017 from The University at Colorado Boulder (CU) obtaining a degree in business finance. Brett is now traveling the world visiting vendors and customers.
Gary Kirpluk is The Berns Company’s specialist in drive- train components and parts. Gary was in the Navy and was a former parts manager at Toyota. He has spent nearly 20 years at Berns. Gary is always on the move. He works off-site; however, he is always accessible by cell. He has a thorough knowledge of all drive axle, steering drive axle and brake parts from every supplier. Jaime’ Guia is The Berns Company’s parts & used parts manager. Jaime started out dismantling forklifts over 20 years ago and has the hands-on knowledge to help you through even the toughest-to-understand problems with identification of parts for all makes of lift trucks.
Lewis Mangold has been with The Berns Company for over 20 years. Lewis is familiar with all aspects of the company. Lewis is a former M60 Gunner as well as a repelling and jungle expert with A Co. 1st. 504 ABN. INF based out of Fort Bragg North Carolina. At 64 Lewis received his Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
